Photo Tips for the Best Results

You don't need a professional camera—just a few clear photos with good lighting. Use this checklist to get the most recognizable results in your personalized storybook.

The 60-second checklist

  • Bright light: natural window light is best.
  • Face visible: no hats, sunglasses, or big hair covering the face.
  • Face-forward: straight-on or slight angle beats profile shots.
  • High resolution: avoid blurry or heavily compressed images.
  • Minimal filters: skip strong filters that change skin tones.

Do this (recommended)

  • Take photos in daylight, near a window.
  • Use a plain background when possible (less visual noise).
  • Capture a neutral or slight smile expression.
  • Include 2–3 photos from a similar time period.

Avoid this (common issues)

  • Very dark indoor lighting
  • Strong shadows across the face
  • Extreme angles (top-down or chin-up)
  • Filters that change facial features
  • Group photos where faces are tiny

If you're including family members or pets

Use the same tips: clear face, good light, simple background. For pets, aim for a calm photo where the eyes are visible.

Photo tips FAQs

What kind of photo works best?

Use a clear, well-lit, face-forward photo where the face is easy to see. Avoid blurry images, sunglasses, or heavy shadows.

How many photos should I upload?

If you can, upload 2–3 clear photos from a similar time period. Multiple photos help you get a more consistent, recognizable result.

Can I include family members or pets?

Many stories support adding siblings, parents, grandparents, and pets as supporting characters. Use the same photo tips: good light, clear face, simple background.
